The Path Of Power
MONITOR: The Male Self, or man, develops the personality along the path of power and therefore experiences the opportunity for many actions and reactions. Because the Male Self is active within both men and women, it often becomes the focal point for fears and other emotions, attitudes, expectations and desires which hold onto the past.
Mental Focus of Masculine Energy
The masculine energy, manifested through the Male Self or the masculine aspect of the personality, radiates from a central core to the periphery. In the central core ultimately lies a focus in the mental body. Inasmuch as the mental body becomes developed, that focus reflects wise considerate actions. wise, considerate;. Inasmuch as that focus remains undeveloped, it provides the basis for fearful, aggressive and harmful actions.
Learning Motive through Action
The Male Self in each personality is required to undertake action after action, finding in the consequences of those actions an evaluation of the concept or motive which generated them. This gives the Male Self some advantages not enjoyed by the Female Self. The Male Self has the advantage of learning about a variety of concepts and motives, whereas the Female Self is often more limited in her exposure.
On the other hand, the Female Self is more naturally centered in the energy of Love and often regards the Male Self as an “ignorant warrior.” As long as she can remain centered in Love, the Female Self naturally draws forth the wisdom of Higher Consciousness to guide her actions, yet often her actions occur within a smaller arena of possibilities than those of the Male Self.
Lessons of Power for Male Self
The Male Self needs to learn the lessons of power before being fully capable of learning the lessons of Love. The Female Self, on the other hand, must learn the lessons of Love before learning the lessons of power. The Male Self thus is given opportunities for acting with motives of ignorance produced by spiritual disconnection.
Native Wisdom in Early Lifetimes
In the first series of lifetimes in physical embodiment, the Male Self retains some residual wisdom gained from his existence in the higher planes of existence. Then through a natural progression the Male Self becomes involved in illusion, glamour and maya, losing his native wisdom. He encounters a journey that leads him into a keen awareness of the so-called external world. He learns to exercise power in various forms through managing survival, competence and rulership.
Victim-Victimizer
His journey through the lessons of power gives him a wide range of experiences in which he is victimized, then learns to become a victimizer. After experiencing the karmic consequences of victimizing others, the Male Self learns balance in the beginning of a newly established wisdom, the wisdom provided through the Law of Karmic Consequences.
Motives, Actions and Consequences
The Male Self observes the consequences of his actions and gradually formulates a concept of the importance of his intention, his motive. When the Male Self focuses his awareness inwardly upon his inner being and motives, he begins a fearsome journey through darkness which corresponds to the mythological “journey through hell.” He faces his actions and their consequences, learning to distill his motives. Where he has well-established patterns of behavior based upon unwise motives, he must develop ability to extinguish those motives and the behaviors they generate. The Male Self first develops external power, exerting influence in the physical world, then later learns internal power, exerting influence to change himself.
Female Awareness of Own Being
The Female Self, in contrast, is at first strongly focused in awareness of her own being. She is inundated with emotions,., desires and the other elements of the astral body. She is faced with the need to move beyond the apparent chaos of her own being into relationships where, through their interplay, she begins to understand, to obtain a mental grasp of the apparently chaotic astral existence. As she gains inner understanding, she is drawn more deeply into the so-called external world, often losing herself in relationships. Through an extended process of trial and error, she learns how to distinguish her motives.
Discerning Astral Emotions from Causal (Soul-level) Love
Most often, the Female Self learns to distinguish between astral energies and causal energies – between emotions, desires, attitudes and expectations, which often are in conflict, and the causal (Soul Level) expression of purposes. When the Female Self is able to discern Love clearly and distinctly from associated emotions, she gains access to mental and causal resources within the personality. She receives assistance from Higher Consciousness which helps her to make wise decisions based upon the motive of Love and to activate power, which she had previously been afraid to exercise.
Discerning Mental Ideas from Causal (Soul-level) Ideals
The Male Self learns through the use of power to discern the difference between ideas or concepts and ideals or purposes. Where the Female Self must distinguish between astral and causal energies, the Male Self must distinguish between mental and causal energies. When the Male Self is yet in the process of making that determination, he often becomes overly reliant upon mental capabilities.
Intellect vs. Intuition
Because his motive then is based on fear of losing control of himself, his style of mental performance is more allied with the use of intellect than intuition. In contrast, the Female Self relies more upon intuition as a means of organizing her mental capability. Thus, the two genders approach the same type of mental development from complementary directions.
Discovering Astral Existence
Humanity is now in the process of discovering its astral existence, learning its qualities, opportunities and limitations. In future development, increasing numbers of persons will develop intuitive mental capability. This remains a high priority which the Spiritual Hierarchy attempts in many ways to cultivate.
Male and Female Modes of Problem Resolution
At this time, most women throughout the planet use intuition to assist them in resolving their problems of expressing Love in a world dominated by fear. Most men use intellect to help them solve their problems in facing a world of power struggles based on fear. Men and women face considerable challenges in understanding each other’s ways and positions.
Relationships and Group Consciousness
The polarization between the two genders, however, is decreasing as men and women achieve deeper relationships and as the Male Selves and Female Selves in each person achieve deeper relationships with each other. Relationships and group consciousness, even if it is a group of two persons, represent the significant direction for humanity.
With the development of individualized consciousness, the Hierarchy began in 1500 AD the shift toward group consciousness, which is not a herd consciousness, but a group of distinct individuals who learn the value of working in harmony to achieve purposes which benefit all of Life. Therefore, each relationship between persons is ultimately put to that test. Each member of that relationship is challenged and evaluated by Higher Consciousness according to that test as to the motives of each personality and how each Self contributes to the benefit of all Life.
Pain as Stimulus for Learning
Male Selves at this time are heavily burdened by the residue of past mistakes. Female Selves are likewise burdened with the residue of past failed relationships. Considerable pain radiates in the astral bodies and physical bodies of each gender. Pain provides the stimulus for learning. As each person, each Self, asks for assistance from Higher Consciousness, they may accelerate their learning process and reduce the time and degree of their suffering.
Creative vs. Destructive Motives
The Male Self and the male consciousness expressed in humanity at this time are engulfed in a desperate struggle wherein creative motives are meeting destructive motives, and the image of Armageddon or the final battle represents this conflict. From the viewpoint of Higher Consciousness, the conflict is already decided, because the forces of evolution will work their way regardless of the hindrances of illusion, glamour and maya. However, the individual Male Self or man may not have arrived at this realization and consequently struggles with desperation and despair. In this time especially, the Male Self and men need the infusion of Love which uplifts the masculine focus from its sense of certain failure to genuine optimism.
Unconditional Love
The gift of unconditional Love, presented with honesty, altruism and sensitivity, now has more influence upon masculine consciousness than at any previous time in history. As Male Selves and men are able to accept Love and place it at the central focus of their being, using it to establish their own spiritual connection and guide their actions, then will the masculine aspect of humanity transform.
Transformation
From our perspective, the transformation is already occurring, yet is often unrecognized and discounted. In our view, the next 50 to 75 years will see much of this transformation occurring throughout the world, regardless of culture. In consideration of the five thousand years of male- dominated culture, men and women, Male and Female Selves, may rejoice that the time of creative synthesis and balance between genders is in sight.
This time of final processing will prove challenging for all upon the planet, and thus Male Selves and men are encouraged to meet the challenge of accepting and acting upon the motive of Love as opposed to the motive of fear. This means that they must be willing to surrender personal control to transpersonal control, accepting the guidance and wisdom of Higher Consciousness.
Discovering and Radiating Love
Female Selves and women at this time face the challenge of firmly discovering the Love at the core of their being and radiating that Love as purely as possible, even in the face of power abuses. This means that the feminine aspects of humanity are encouraged to learn the lessons of power in order to maintain their focus of Love. In these ways, the two genders may achieve creative synthesis in the not too distant future.
We believe this provides a basis for questions and discussion.
Questions and Answers
Q1: Effect of Women’s Male Basic Selves on Relationships
JUDITH: Monitor, I would like to know, for those of us who are currently in female form, how our Male Basic Selves affect our relationships with men. I’m thinking specifically of marriages, romantic relationships, but also fathers, brothers, sons.
Male Self to Male Self Relationships
MONITOR: The common pattern in human relationships lies in the Male Self of one person relating to the Male Self in another person, and the Female Self in one person relating to the Female Self in another person. Thus, the Male Self in the woman relates most readily to the Male Self in the men in her relationships. Generally, the relationship will be harmonious when the two Male Selves are able to accept each other, respect each other, and assist each other. If they fear, mistrust and conflict with each other, their relationships are limited and filled with power struggles.
If the relationship between the Male Selves of two people is able to incorporate Love, even part of the time, those relationships will grow. One will learn much from the other, because they are receptive to sharing of ideas and even emotions.
In most relationships throughout humanity, the bonds of affection are established by Female Selves, while the boundaries and directions of the relationships are established mainly by Male Selves. As each Male Self learns to exercise power with the motive of Love, relationships become transformative, opening instead of limiting the possibilities of relationship. Perhaps you have more focused questions.
Q2: Spousal Abuse
JUDITH: There seems to be a great deal of what we refer to as “spousal abuse” right now in this culture. I’m wondering if that’s an inability of the man in the relationship to accept the power of the Male Basic Self of the woman?
MONITOR: Often, that is the case, yet the fundamental cause lies in the degree of pain carried by the Male Selves of both parties of the relationship. Their psychological pain is often intense. When it becomes unbearable by the Male Self, he is more apt to strike out through aggressive action than the Female Self who may be in equivalent pain.
Thus the actions of the Male Selves are more apparent on the surface of physical existence. If those actions lead to learning, then the actions ultimately become productive. The victimizer learns how to transform himself, which is the purpose of karmic consequences.
Q3: Expression of Anger
MARY: In working with my Basic Selves, one of the main things that came up was the amount of anger needing expression that did not have any place for expression. It wasn’t only my Male Self who needed to express his anger, but also my Female and both Judge Selves. They all expressed it in a different way, but once that anger was expressed, it certainly helped in their work toward integration.
MONITOR: Indeed. This represents the challenge of the Male Self, who seeks to understand his motives. He cannot truly understand his motives until he understands his astral, as well as his mental expressions. He is required to face his emotions, desires, attitudes and expectations.
Bondage and Freedom
Anger represents a particular challenge at this time, since most of the planet, most of humanity, is held in bondage to a wealthy few. Bondage represents the karmic consequences of past choices. Most human beings have placed themselves in bondage, yet even conditions of slavery and exploitation yield valuable lessons. The experience of bondage teaches Male and Female Selves alike how to achieve true freedom, which consists of freedom from their illusions, glamours and maya. As individual persons and Selves struggle to recognize and express their anger, they rattle their chains and create their motivation for achieving freedom.
Q4: Split Aspects of Female Selves
LOIS: My Male Self would like very much to work with my Female Self. My Female Self is, however, expressing in two parts, one angelic and one devic. I am aware that many of the other people that I work with right now have that same experience. What can the Male Self do in relating to double aspects of the Female Self?
MONITOR: The Male Self, who seeks to merge with the Female Self yet finds that the Female Self is divided into split expressions, must learn to relate to each expression. This means that the Male Self is challenged to devote extra attention and energy to relating to both female aspects. This challenges the Male Self who would prefer to withdraw. Withdrawal leads only to isolation, loneliness and the bondage of fear. Connection through relationship brings him closer to the achievement of Love.
If the Male Self relates to both aspects of the Female Self, he may learn much more rapidly about their unique qualities and dispositions. He may learn about their needs and the different modes of behavior that they employ. The Male Self who faces that challenge gains commensurate rewards.
For example, a Male Self with outerspacial traits needs to relate to a Female Self who has not achieved firm unity. The Female Self expresses in one aspect of devic characteristics and in another aspect of angelic traits. The two aspects of the Female Self are learning about themselves and each other. They gain awareness of their specific qualities and modes of behavior. Through contrasts, their learning process is accelerated.
The devic aspect of the Female Self learns, to her amazement, that the angelic aspect is focused on Divine Will. At first, she believes that is the height of ignorance. Then, by observing the actions and consequences experienced by the angelic aspect, she begins to understand the value of that approach. The devic aspect may then incorporate angelic ways into her behavior.
Conversely, the angelic aspect observes the creative spontaneity and forthright expression of the devic aspect. Initially alarmed by such an approach, she considers that the height of foolishness. Yet, through observing actions and consequences based on that mode of consciousness, the angelic aspect learns how to incorporate devic characteristics into her mode of being. Thus, the two aspects of the Female Self gradually join.
The outerspacial Male Self is given accelerated opportunities for learning both modes that the Female Self aspects demonstrate. The entire arrangement leads to greater integration of the Life energies expressed in unique patterns of behavior by the different types of consciousness. The Male Self must be patient and take advantage of the opportunity.
LOIS: Thank you very much. That helps a lot.
Q5: Characteristics of the Highly Developed Male Self
JULIE G: Monitor, would you give us some characteristics of a person with a more highly developed Male Self, as opposed to someone with a Male Self who is just beginning development?
MONITOR: The highly developed Male Self is able to act with the motive of Love and the wisdom of Higher Consciousness. He has developed a clear sense of Love in the center of his being and thus radiates it in his actions. His decisions are made in constant consultation with the High Self and Spirit Teachers and thereby reflect their wisdom. Their wisdom, their Love, becomes his. He values the Female Self and seeks complete merging with her. By grasping the value of feminine consciousness, the Male Self is able to assist her in her growth and to receive her assistance with his growth.
Merging into Androgynous Consciousness
The merging of the two does not submerge the qualities or opportunities of each. The achievement of androgynous consciousness gives greater freedom of expression to both masculine and feminine aspects. All that changes is their sense of separate identity.
Through merging causal, mental, astral, etheric and physical forces, they achieve unity of identity. The two become one, replicating the androgynous consciousness of the Soul who created and sustains them. They merge then with the Soul in a graduated series of spiritual initiations.
The Primitive Male Self
The primitive Male Self contrasts with this picture. He uses power based upon the motive of fear, which means that he is in conflict with the essence of his own being. He is separated from Higher Consciousness and unable to absorb its wisdom or use its guidance. He is like a bull in a china shop, unaware, insensitive of the effect of his actions. He is also totally unaware of his motives. Thus, he needs to progress through a series of motives, ranging from survival to safety to affiliation to competence and ultimately to cooperation and Love.
Have we addressed your question?
JULIE G: Yes, you have. Thank you.
Q6: Male Self Guilt Over Past Behavior
JULIE G: I’d like to add one more point. When Male Selves have misused their power in the past, many of them carry a great deal of guilt about it. How can the Outer Self best assist the Male Self in achieving freedom from guilt?
Internal Dialogue to Clear Emotional Residues
MONITOR: Most Male Selves at this time, and certainly for those present in the room, are burdened with emotional residues or glamours from past mistakes. The Outer Self may assist such a Male Self by internal dialogue, getting to know the Male Self and learning his needs, hopes and fears. The Outer Self may ask significant questions which stimulate the Male Self to attain greater awareness of his past mistakes and the emotional residue from them. Emotional cleansing techniques may be engaged by the Outer Self to assist the Male Self in releasing and resolving the emotional residues.
Glamour and Illusion Clearing
Further, the Outer Self may engage in the techniques of glamour clearing and illusion clearing for the Male Self. The Outer Self may play a dramatic role in helping the Male Self overcome blinding fears about his own inadequacy, his failure to perform correctly.
The Outer Self often holds the key to the Male Self’s reformation. With the companionship of the Outer Self, the Male Self may be willing to reconnect to Higher Consciousness. If he attempts to reconnect before he has cleansed himself sufficiently of emotional residues, he will fail. Thus, the Male Self must be assisted in emotional purification before attempting High Self connection.
JULIE B: Monitor, I’m curious. You say that the Male Self needs to be assisted before connecting with the High Self. How would the Male Self be assisted? I don’t know what you mean when you say that.
MONITOR: The Outer Self must help the Male Self clear himself of emotional residue before the Male Self can tolerate energetic connection with the High Self. If the Male Self is not sufficiently purified in his astral body, the energetic purity of the High Self will prove too disturbing to his astral body. Therefore, the Male Self must cleanse himself before entering the temple. The Outer Self often provides the companionship, encouragement and focus for the Male Self to accomplish this necessary cleansing.
JULIE: Thank you, Monitor.
Q7: Brain Hemisphere Coordination
JUDITH: There have been recent reports in the news based on scientific studies that men tend to use only one-half of their brain and have difficulty switching back and forth between right and left brain functions, while women tend to function with both at the same time and don’t have the problem of switching back and forth. I would like to find out, from your perspective, if this is an accurate representation and, if so, what difficulty that poses for a Male Basic Self that a Female Basic Self might not have in working towards integration?
MONITOR: We find that these studies are based upon the electrical currents expressed upon the surface of the cortex of the brain. Therefore, they are misleading.
Many of a Male Self’s or a man’s expressions occur below the surface of the cortex. Present scientific instruments are not capable of measuring that electrical activity in the brain. In our view, the current findings are incomplete.
We find that both men and women utilize both aspects, or sides, of the brain, but in different patterns. The findings of science have been beneficial in creating avenues for greater respect and tolerance of women, yet later findings will provide the view that both men and women utilize intricate coordinations between the hemispheres of the brain. Even later findings will discover that the mind is the true arena and that the brain is only the reflection of the mind.
Q8: Anatomical Location of Thoughts
JUDITH: I would like to ask a question that I asked in another form a long time ago. There have been times in history where the thought process, sometimes termed the “Soul” or the “mind,” was thought of as being located in the liver or the heart. The ancient Egyptians, for instance, drained the brain from the skull at the time the body was being mummified because it was seen as spongy material of no value and did not have to be preserved. Yet we, in this culture, tend to think of our brain in our heads as being our “mind,” where our awareness is located. Do our thought processes have a physical body location and, if so, where?
MONITOR: No. Thought processes; occur in the mental body, not in the physical body. However, the thought processes in the mental body (which surrounds the astral, etheric and physical bodies) need to correlate with physical action and therefore present their effect in the electrical circuitry and biochemical patterns of the physical body. The entire physical body is utilized, not merely the brain.
JUDITH: So, studies on the size of the brain between genders or between races are really meaningless?
MONITOR: Yes.
Q9: Harmfulness of Curse Words on Consciousness
JULIE B: Are cuss words and phrases that Male Selves often like to use harmful to the Planetary Consciousness or individual consciousness?
MONITOR: Yes, in the immediate sense that they express discord. Ultimately, they are not harmful, but part of the evolutionary process.
The use of curses and shocking words represents a form of self-empowerment. Their expression in speech represents the discord in an individual or an individual Self. It therefore represents a call for help, often when the person or Self does not recognize the resources of Higher Consciousness.
MARY: Is that the same for women who use a lot of curses?
MONITOR: Yes, the pattern is the same for women.
Q10: Single Parenting
JUDITH: If our culture is moving into single parenting, particularly mother parenting, how does this affect the development of Male Basic Selves in the children, when they’re interacting with a mother and not with a father-figure?
MONITOR: The mother, acting as a single parent, must perform functions of both mother and father. This causes her to draw more upon her Male Self, which represents a karmic learning situation that helps to make the Female Self in the mother more respectful of the Male Self.
She realizes the need for the Male Self’s influence in the act of parenting. This situation often occurs karmically when the Female Self, in past lifetimes, has grown disdainful and rejecting of the Male Self because he did not meet her expectations.
The act of single parenting represents an opportunity for accelerated growth which gives the Female Self occasion to learn many of the lessons of power. It also gives the Male Self the opportunity to work in greater harmony of purpose with the Female Self.
Conclusions
Value of Self Integration Work
We find that the concept of the human personality as a cluster of Selves is progressing as increasing numbers of persons explore their own dynamics.
In previous ages, a personality achieved much by gaining only a dim perception of inner dynamics. That perception was often subjective and vague yet provided a path for progress inasmuch as the person realized the impact of motives.
In this age, a person may gain awareness of the motives of each inner aspect or Self, learning how those motives interact to produce harmony or conflict. Each person may use the power of communication and attunement with Higher Consciousness to achieve agreements among Selves which help them resolve conflicts, meet their separate needs, and produce true harmony and unification.
Soul Illumination and Activation
This work of Self Integration prepares the personality as a vehicle, an instrument, of its Soul, making Soul Illumination and Activation feasible. As the Male and Female Selves in each person join in voluntary unity, they render the personality pliable for the will and purposes of the Soul. In this development lies the hope of humanity and the Planetary Being.
We encourage each one to develop themselves toward this state of unified androgynous being.
We are pleased to discuss these issues and possibilities with you this evening. We look forward to the next discussion on the dynamics of Basic Self interaction and development.
We bless each one, and we leave you now.
GROUP: Thank you, Monitor.
EXERCISE: Drawing to Better Understand the Male Self
In conclusion, we suggest, for those who are interested, a homework assignment which offers the Male Self the same opportunity offered to the Female Self in last month’s lesson. Achieve attunement with your Male Self and invite him to create a picture, a drawing. Give him the freedom to do what he wishes. When completed, ask him to explain or interpret the picture and what it means to him.
